Choosing the perfect kitchen fixtures and fittings takes time and contemplation. Cowan Building offers some top-tips on how to choose the best finishing touches to your kitchen design.

It’s easy to get ruffled by the sheer amounts of fancy fixtures and fittings on offer. With so many designs, styles, colours and textures to choose from it’s no wonder many homeowners are left overwhelmed by the options when it comes to knuckling down the final choices.

But the final choice is something that shouldn’t be rushed. Remembering that the fixtures and fittings you choose now will either compliment, your overall look, or completely ruin it.

Kitchen Sinks

Today there are endless designs of sinks available. From double basins to butler sinks, round sinks, rectangular, with or without draining boards, and even under the counter options for the sleekest of looks - the options are endless.

When it comes to sinks you really need to take into account the feel of the home and space. If you have an ultra-chic kitchen; chances are that lovely rustic butler sink that has caught your eye will completely throw off your design.

Only look at the products that suit the overall feel and design. Sometimes something completely beautiful will grab your attention, only to get it home and added to the space that simply does not suit. Leaving you with a sink that sticks out like a sore thumb – OUCH!

Also consider the colouring of your home and ensure you have a good idea of the feel you are wanting to create. There is a good array of finishes available including; the traditional stainless steel, to the matt stainless, integrated benchtop textures and ceramic.

 Kitchen Taps

There are a few things to consider when contemplating what types of taps will work well with your space.

·      Functionality – your taps, no matter how fancy and ultra-modern – should work well and be easy to turn on and off by all in the household. Basic common sense prevails here.

·      Good Fit – do these taps fit well with the rest of the home? Or will you be replacing all of the taps in the home to match?

·      Colouring – do the colours I have chosen match with my overall design of the space? Consider, if you have chosen black tapware but have lots of chrome in your kitchen, will this throw off your design or the look you are after?

Your humble kitchen tap can also be a huge cooking accessory in the home. Today taps can have built-in freezing cold filtered water or boiling water. The new generation taps that allow pull out sprays for larger pots and pans can elegantly turn your kitchen sink into a modern commercial kitchen. These come in contemporary or rustic designs to suit most kitchens.

 Lighting

Probably one of the last concepts to consider is how you light your incredible space. Now is the time to stay true to your design concept and not to get swayed by some of the cool options on offer.

If you are a budding kitchen chef, then get creative with your lighting and consider under cupboard lights that will give you ample lighting without maximum intrusion to your design.

It’s also important to add good lighting to island benches and heavily used areas like toaster / kettle cupboards and pantries.  Again, particularly with the island benchtop lighting - stay true to your design to compliment the overall look.

Cupboard and Draw Handles

The cupboard and draw handles you choose now can actually make or break your overall design so ensure you take the time to choose carefully and get the right advice.

It’s also a good idea to remember that you will be using this detail every single day so ensure they feel right and also look the part. Handles that easily mark or are hard to clean may be a problem for a large family with lots of sticky little fingers.

Rent or Live?

If you are renovating a home for rental purposes, it’s important to really consider the overall functionality and durability in your fixtures and fittings. You can find many beautiful fixtures that are also incredibly durable and will stand the test of time making them ideal for the rental reno.
