Designer Trends

Are you looking for what's trending in home design and renovations? Cowan Building looks at the top trends featured in homes around the world.

From kitchens to bathrooms and everything in between, it's been a busy year of trends for new and existing homes.

Blissful Bathrooms

Whether it's a new home or a renovation, one thing is for sure - It's all about bringing the outdoors inside! From utilising natural textural aspects such as woodgrain or popping a splash of green on the walls, mother earth is shining bright in bathroom trends. Of course, adding warmth with texture is a big plus, as to adding plant life for that extra touch of outdoor bliss.

Textures are big and bold – think features tiles on walls or floors. These are a great way to add some detail, particularly if you are going for the white-on-white look.

Our bathrooms have also become a place of relaxation and rejuvenation. For this reason, there is certainly a trend toward creating a space people want to stay. The spa feel is undoubtedly a crowd-pleaser! Creating a warm and inviting space that encourages you to stay longer, bathrooms are becoming a shared papering area, and even taking some shine off the kitchen as the 'catch up’ zone.

Shower/bath combinations are also making a comeback…and we are not talking about the outdated shower over-the-bath combo. Wet rooms and shower rooms are becoming the big thing for 2023. These section-off areas are perfect for keeping the water contained while allowing the space to seem much more extensive. Plus, it makes bathroom cleaning duties super easy! Double shower heads and large free-standing baths are ideally suited to these areas. They add an opulent touch to any new bathroom.

Classy Kitchens

Kitchens are undoubtedly the hub of the home. They can quickly transform from a cooking station to an entertaining zone, homework bench, and office space. They are where we catch up on our day's events, sit down with loved ones, and prepare delicious meals. It's this social aspect that is trending in 2023. More space to sit and enjoy each other's company – while ensuring the home chef is not left in the dark!

Large sweeping island benches are still a big hit, with ample seating for guests and family members. However, the island is certainly gone tech – think USB charging points and hidden storage for homework or work duties.

Like with the bathroom, it's all about bringing the outdoors inside! With the recent pandemic, most kitchen lovers craved the great outdoors, undoubtedly impacting how we design our kitchens. From expansive windows or adding warm earthy tones to the kitchen area is becoming very popular. Nature inspires many home designs in 2023. Think stone, warm, inviting tones of green and brown while contrasting against the neural pallet. Texture is also paramount with kitchens – whether you think ultra-chic and contemporary designs or the more traditional Hamptons style. A splash of wooden texture can add beautiful focal points around the space while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Going bold with lighting options is also a popular design component in 2023. Think large pendant lighting and feature lighting throughout the space.

Luxurious Living Rooms

Remember the living room! With many spending far too much time in front of the box over the lockdown periods, the desire to have the perfect entertainment space has become a must. Think custom-built entertainment units and home theatres. No surprise – mother nature wants her day to shine! Inside! Maximising natural light and windows is becoming a big trend as homeowners want to blur the lines between the outside and inside.

Indoor plants are also big on the agenda. They bring that natural element into your loungeroom area with easy-to-care-for succulents and plants. Lighting is also seeing massive trends. Gone are the downlights, and in are the table lamps and different lighting for different areas of the lounge room.

Zoning is also prevalent – getting the most out of your space is paramount. Many lounge spaces in 2023 will have hidden office nooks and working zone areas.

Outdoor Entertainment

It's no surprise that we all love being outside- without restrictions. So entertaining is big on the menu in 2023, and if the weather is playing ball, you can guarantee this will be spent outdoors.

Outdoor kitchens are becoming more and more popular. These areas can be custom-built to take advantage of the available space and contain a host of beautiful appliances – think grill tops, pizza ovens, and smokers. Allowing you to create the perfect outdoor area for cooking, entertaining, and eating.

2023 is all about nature and entertainment. Allowing our homes to shine with versatility and style.

Happy Planning!
