Fixtures & Fittings – Bathroom
Renovating your tired bathroom or starting with a blank canvas? Needing some inspiration for choosing the perfect fixtures and fittings? Cowan Building investigates the importance of this final-step, in creating the perfect space.
When it comes to the bathroom, choosing the perfect fixtures and fitting is imperative for your design. They not only finish the desired look; they also add an important element of functionality into your space.
It’s finding the right balance between looking great and working well that sets your final fixtures in place.
It’s also important to get a clear understanding of what your space is being utilised for.
What About Rental Properties?
For rental properties or investment properties, look for fixtures that will stand the test of time and are also sturdy and strong. Keep with a neutral theme that will not quickly date or leave you with fixtures that will need to be replaced in a few years’ time.
This doesn’t mean that the space needs to be boring. There are plenty of wonderful designs available that can offer that timeless look, while being strong and durable. Stick with the trusted themes and remember not to go all out and push against the ultimate theme of the home, or you could end up needing to revamp the entire home to suit the bathroom. It’s also a good idea to match your fixtures, having different colours and different textures can often make for a mumble jumbled look. Other tips for rental or investment bathrooms include;
· Update the shower head
· Hang new shower curtains
· Update tiles
· Add clever shelving
· Consider a new vanity
New Bathroom Renovation
If your starting fresh, or completely gutting the old for new, always seek professional advice. Bathrooms, like kitchens, can be hiding a pandora’s box full of expensive issues. Seeking professional advice early in your project will allow you to ensure you know exactly what you are dealing with.
Bathrooms should flow with the remainder of the home, whether that be rustic or country style to the minimalist chic modern flare. It’s also good to note that your bathroom and toilet should match. Particularly with fixtures. So, if you do have a single toilet/powder room, and you have gone for the highly fashionable black fixtures, it’s a good idea to ensure this room also matches in colours and fixtures.
With fixtures, plan ahead on the look you are trying to create and stick with this look. It’s very easy to pop along to your chosen fixtures store and get completely side-swiped by all the lovely looking taps and sink-ware on offer and lose sight of your original plan.
Some tips include;
· Measurements – make sure your desired fixtures fit in the space they have and are not too overpowering. An oversized vanity or bath in a small space will ruin your overall look.
· Theme – go with the theme of your home so that the entire space flows.
· Lighting – every good bathroom needs good lighting. Consider over-head lighting as well as speciality lighting around mirrors. Many homes with children also consider adding ‘night-lighting’ that allows for safe and undisturbed evening trips to the bathroom.
· Mirrors – beautiful framed mirrors add space and a lot of functionality. They add an important element of depth in a room. Ensure you place these carefully and not opposite baths or toilets.
· Have a plan – sit down and have a good plan when it comes to the overall look and ensure your fixtures match this. It’s easy to rush this process, particularly if you are building a new home from scratch, but taking the time now, will prevent a re-do in six months’ time when you realise the fixtures just do not work.
